Teacup Dog

Advantages and disadvantages of buying a teacup dog bred?
I want to get a Japanese Chin, a baby one. But sometimes I'm scared I will step on it.
But I don't want to get 'a few months' old dog. I want to start out as a baby(8-10 weeks) and watch it grow!
The disadvantage of buying anything labeled a "teacup" is that they don't exist and it's just used as a marketing ploy by irresponsible breeders.
Usually these dogs are bred unnaturally small and the runts are the ones labeled teacup and given extra-high prices. These dogs often have medical problems from being so small, not to mention the fact that the breeders likely didn't test the parents for inherited diseases, so a teacup puppy has a high probability of getting an expensive disease or disorder.
The advantage is that dogs are cute. Tiny dogs are cuter. Maybe you'll attract some new friends with a cute dog.
Japanese Chin are great dogs. I've never owned one but from what I've read they'd definitely be a breed I'd be interested in if I wanted to buy a Toy. Normal size range for a well-bred Chin is 8-11 inches at the withers, so they're hardly a big breed even if they're not labeled "teacup."
I guess having a dog underfoot there's always slight cause for concern that it could be stepped on, but if you've had dogs before with no mishap, and you're not incredibly clumsy, I wouldn't be concerned stepping on her.
The Japanese Chin Club of America is an excellent place to find out more about the breed, as well as to find responsible breeders and national breed rescue. http://www.japanesechinonline.org/
