Airline App

Question to current and retired airline pilots?
Just a couple of questions...
When you are descending into your destination airport when it comes to lining up with the runway that ATC have told you, do you use the ILS system (Frequency & Course) to line up with that runway or do ATC give you the appropriate headings to line you up with the runway?
Also is the ILS system used quite a lot in commercial aviation when coming into land? Or is it pilot preference to use it? If ILS is used most of the time is it a case of leaving the VOR/LOC and APP buttons switched on, on the autopilot engaged then disengaging the autopilot just before touchdown?
Blimey well done everyone some really good answers, don't have a clue who to pick as a best answer!
1) ATC vectors aircraft to line up at a 45 degree or less angle with the ILS. So the transmission to intercept the ILS will be something along the lines of [exluding restrictions] "Turn right heading 150, cleared for the ILS runway 10 approach." This gives the pilot permission to intercept the glide-slope and follow the ILS.
2) In commercial aviation, ILS is used in marginal VFR or IFR conditions, assuming the weather is above the minimums for that category of ILS. Otherwise, ATC can still assign visual approaches. The APP button is turned on as soon as the plane is below the glide slope and beginning to intercept. There are various minimums on when to turn off A/P, depending on the category of ILS.
