Just remember that you are the one whos most likely going to take responsibility of the dog when she goes out, highschool, and when she goes to college.

Once you find a dog you like, research about its temperment and such so you know you are getting the right dog. You can also try http://www.petfinder.com if you were looking into adopting an adult dog. They also have alot of puppies from just a couple of months old to 10 years old. If you just want one from a breeder, make sure its a reputable breeder! don't get one from a petstore, those pups are from puppymills.
Oh yeah, just make sure your 13 year old is ready for a dog. Maybe you can quiz her on how to take care of it and things like that. My uncle wanted to buy my cousin a puppy for her 14th birthday. She wound up getting her a toy poodle, it was a very cute dog. But she was just starting high school and was always out with her friends that he was the one who wound up taking care of it. He thought getting a dog would be a breeze, well that was until he had to start taking care of it! Just make sure you guys are ready for one.
