Pet Straw

Hay/straw or pine chips for chickens?
I'm getting some chicks in a week and i was wondering what is better for the bottom of the brooder. Straw, Hay or Pine chips.
Also i was at the pet store and saw alfalfa cubes for rabbits. Are they good for chicks/chickens too and how do you feed it to them
Actually, for newborn chicks, paper towels or newspaper is best, until they learn to identify their feed bowl. Otherwise, they have a tendency to eat the pine chips, which blocks their system and can cause death. We only switch to pine after 2 weeks. Straw is more appropriate for full-grown chicks, and provides better evaporation (or run-off) of their droppings and moisture, which helps to prevent breast blisters (for meat birds) and various foot fungus. Alfalfa is fine for chickens, and actually can be provided by using hay rather than straw for bedding. The best supplemental food for them is fresh greens - lettuce, kale, collard, etc.
