1st i am not sure where and how it determined good and bad drivers??
fact is your system/component won't work if you doesn't have compatible driver. Most cases windows recognize the best driver and installs itself. Now updating driver is different story. there are several ways you can get those and yes they are free.
right click on my computer, properties, hardware, device manager and see if there's any item listed with yellow exclamation mark. if so, right click on it and select update driver (make sure to be connected with internet), then select option let windows update automatically. Another way is to visit manufacturer's website and download updated driver.
