Puppy biting.....put in crate good idea for punishment?
We have a walker coonhound that is 8 mo's old and spayed. She has lots of energy and we try to run her every night. She has a very sweet side but once and while the devil comes out. When she get over excited, she starts to bite or nip. I have yet to see her do it to anyone but my husband and I......but I don't want to see it either. I have tried pretty much everything that I have read. I've tried spraying her mouth with mouth freshner, tucking my hands under my arms, putting her back in her kennel if she bites, scolding her.......that only gets her more riled up. I am wondering if I scold her and put her in her carrier, will she think of that as a bad place and not want to go in it when we take her in the vehicle?? I try to just walk away when she bites, but honestly I am afraid to turn my back on her. Her little nips causes lots of bruising.
I am looking into obedience school for her, too.
Any advice??
You are right on the money crating for punishment is not a good thing.Try to make her lay down flip her on her side gently and rest your hand on her. do this very calmly. This is a submissive pose that the dog will instantly understand. Do not let her get up until she has given up the fight. This is only to be used when teeth have touched you not for minor things. This is what mom would do if playing gets out of hand. The most important thins is STAY CLAM do not let you temper or fear into the equation!
