Did My Dogs Tooth Rot?
My 3 year old Rat Terrier is at the vet today getting her teeth done because last night I noticed that one of her tiny back teeth was caked over and it was loose. Her other teeth look awful as well, but they aren't loose. Her breath was terrible. We had to take away bones from them because my Great Dane ate a large chunk and he ended up at the vet with a HUGE vet bill. I have a tooth brush and tooth paste for them and I try to brush the teeth as often as possible. But since we have 4 dogs and I spend 10 hours a day at work, I dont have time everyday to brush them. My Great Dane can't eat solid foods so his breath is the worst and then of course he isn't getting a daily scraping eating solid food. So my questions are: Did her tooth rot? Is that why it was caked over and loose? How often is recomended to brush their teeth? Any advice on type of bones that don't break or toys that clean the teeth? Are greenies bad for dogs? (I heard they cant be digested sometimes)
Thanks
It's entirely possible your dog's tooth has rotted. You'll need to take her to the vet and have a full dental examination (and, if the tooth IS rotted, an extraction) to be sure. If you dog needs to be sedated or your vet doesn't perform un-sedated dental work (many don't), this can be a very pricey procedure.
As for toys that clean teeth, you'd be most interested in toys that promote chewing safely. As you have such a big size difference, you're going to want to separate your dogs when they have their chew toys - and always remember! Dogs must be supervised with these toys! Even the most indestructible toy can sometimes break with a determined dog.
My favorite recommendation is the Kong Dental Stick with a light layer of peanut butter on the inside of the treat and the grooves to encourage chewing. The good thing about this treat, too, is that it's reusable and Kong offers a warranty on the product. You can spice things up by occasionally giving her a bone by herself and under supervision to make sure your other dogs don't get into it.
Greenies are not horrible for dogs, but they shouldn't be your first stop - they have a lot of fillers and other things you wouldn't want your dog eating, regardless of digestibility.
Your number one source of tooth care, though, is you. It shouldn't take you more than two to three minutes per dog to brush their teeth - if you're having a lot of trouble, ask your vet or groomer for recommendations on how to do it most effectively. It's extremely important to keep up with this, as it's a lot cheaper (and safer) than expensive and risky surgeries for extractions later in life.
Good luck!
