Did Ben Fanelli have his helmet properly secured?
I see it all the time in the NHL where a players helmet flies off all to easily. A helmet can only protect so much if it isn't properly fastened? Is that part of the equation with his skull injury or am I mistaken?
That point has been raised but, in the OHL's latest statement they say they are satisfied his helmet was properly secured and they added that it was the visor not the helmet that shattered.
Sort of like the PFDs in a boat question (What good is the Person Flotation Device to you if you're not wearing it). It's not like you're going to get a decent warning before disaster happens. Be prepared.
Fanelli's face struck the metal support post with such impact it shattered his visor and knocked his helmet askew. When he fell to the ice, he sustained further skull damage.
Hockey is a body contact sport. Hits will happen but, just like a player is responsible for what happens with his stick (if you hit a guy in the head with it accidentally and you draw blood you could be kicked out of the game) so too a player is responsible for his actions on the ice with regards to checking. You have to be in control of your body. Whether the player turns his back when you start your run at a check is completely your responsibility. You have to be able to avoid hitting him illegally.
In this case, Liambas had Fanelli in his bomb sights from the blueline in and gave himself no opportunity to avoid the hit.
The idea is to knock the other guy off the puck, not knock him out of the game. When you're hitting a guy around the boards, you have to have some control so you don't end up knocking the guy's block off.
Each player is responsible for his on ice actions. There doesn't have to be intent to get kicked from the game, just a total lack of respect for the other players in the game. It's not a free-for-all. There are rules and you can play within them and still deliver great checks.
