Dog gets wrapped up in seat belt?
We purchased a dog harness for our 3.5 month old lab mix, and she always gets tangled up in the seatbelt. When we put her in, we pull the seat belt tight, but she always seems to be able to losen it, and she turns around and gets wrapped up. She doesn't losen the harness, but the seat belt. We have to pull the car over, and then she has to sit on my lap while my husband drives. Are there any sort of seat belt locks I can buy? Or is there any other type of device that would work? We don't have a truck or an SUV, so we can't put her in the back.

I'd like to avoid her getting hurt (which she does when she gets wrapped up). I'm asking for advice so she WON'T need to sit on my lap when she's 60 pounds. I'm looking for advice not annoyance.
I think I know what is going on with your seatbelt. You probably have something called a switchable retractor, meaning that your seatbelt will only lock into position if the vehicle stops suddenly or in some cars if you move too quickly. To activate the locking mechanism, slowly pull the seatbelt all the way out, then let is retract. As it retracts, it will then lock into position when it's tight and your dog won't be able to work it loose like she can when it's not locked.
I think that for larger dogs, the harnesses are the safest, especially the ones made by IMMI which are crashtested (you can see the video here http://www.immioutdoors.com/petbuckle/why_petbuckle.htm ). They also make most of the straps for child seat manufacturers. However, if you do not have switchable retractors, then your best solution may be to get a crate and secure it with cargo straps.
We have a small dog and she's in a Sherpa carrier in the car. If we ever get a larger dog, we'll go with the IMMI system.
