My dog has parvo if it's white blood cell count is 1000, is it still 50-50 chance of survival?
I do understand that it's 50-50, and I don't need smart asses just people who understand that pet's are more than that. this dog is a peice of our family any serious answers is greatly appreciated please do help. Yuuki is frail, and we are to right now her white bloodcell count is 1500 and needs to be 6000 for a greater chance. please let us know
Whenever there's a raging infection in an animal or human, our white blood cells go to work to fight off the invader. This can cause the WBC count to either skyrocket into the 20,000+ range, or plummet to where your dog's is. The fact that it's so low means that your dog's main defense cells are being killed off while they attempt to kill the virus. They're losing the fight, essentially. Your dog's body may come back and you'll see the WBC count starting to rise again, but it may be too late. Parvo is probably the worst infection dogs can get because it works through their bodies so rapidly. At this point, I would agree with your vet and say it's about a 50/50 shot that she will recover. With a little luck, and maybe some immune-boosting supplements, she may pull through.
