How to travel with pet rat?
I am hoping to get a pet rat, but I was wondering if it is possible to travel around with me simply holding it. Or maybe it could be in my shirt pocket with the head sticking out. Or maybe.. maybe standing on my shoulder like a parrot... . I was hoping to travel mostly in inside places like around houses, and other indoor places like maybe stores. Is it even possible to do this without my rat running/wandering off? Or is this just silly dreaming T_T ?
First of all, I am hoping that you consider getting 2 or more rats. They are very social animals They crave and need conspecific companionship.
Second, it may take some patience and practice for your rats to understand they need to stay on your shoulder. But they usually learn quickly. After they learn this, they rarely jump off, however they may "slide" down as a means of exploring. I have one outgoing rat that thinks she can do anything.
That said, it is possible to take your pet rats places. But there are somethings you need to consider:
1. Rats poop and pee
2. Rats need access to water at least once an hour
3. Most stores do not allow pets inside (especially if they know its a rat)
4. When walking where other pets are (i.e. dogs) your rats may get frightened. When I take my rats for "walks" on my shoulders, I always keep their carrier over my shoulder. If they get scared, they go in there for protection.
5. You may also consider a harness and leash. My friend and I have ferret leashes for our rats that are fully adjustable. While keeping them in a safe area, this will ensure they don't get too far away from you. BUT BEWARE, they are tricky and may be able to wiggle out.
For the most part, it's best to just play with your rats at home and in a safe place. But taking them out to the pet store every once in a while is not terrible. In the meantime, you can educate people about pet rats and how great they are! Just be careful with them, especially around other animals.
