How to get my dog to stop poopin in kennel?
I adopted my 3 month old lab from my job ( i work at an animal hospital). I take him to work with me almost everyday and i put him in one of the cages in the back. I check on him periodically and take him for quick walks. What I dont understand is that he will poop and urinate in the cage all the time even after i take him out. And when he poops he will make a huge mess of the cage. But when i leave him in his crate at my house he will not poop or urinate in his cage and won't make a mess. What is the cause of this and how can i make him change?
i have put him in the small cages at my job before and he makes a bigger mess than he does when he's in the big cage. The big cage is abut the size of the crate he has at home. Just taller.

This little guy has already had a pretty full plate of experiences for one little guy to have to go thru. I am fairly certain that this is an anxiety issue with him. He knows that he is not supposed to poop in his crate, as is evidenced by his behavior at home. However, the vet's office is a stressful place for any dog to be, and he is probably following the signals of all the other (and older) dogs who are in the vet's office on any given day. He smells their fear and he smells their feces, and he gets confused. I'd be willing to bet that when he's not there, some other dog may occupy that crate or has in the past, and perhaps he also smells the residue of the other dogs. He also remembers that this vet's office is where he was brought at a time when he was at his lowest point (living on the street), and so he has a bad association with being in the vet's office.
My suggestion is to try leaving him at home. If you can't get away for long enough to run home and let him out during the day, find a neighbor or friend who can. A puppy cannot go for really long stretches without having a potty break, and he shouldn't be made to.
Keep in mind, he is only 3 months old. Some puppies will still have an occasional accident, and perhaps this is what is happening with him. When you are at home, you are able to monitor him more closely, and you may be picking up on subtle clues he is giving you that are helping to keep him from having an accident in his crate at home. You don't have time to do that at work, and this probably plays into it as well.
Another thing to consider is that he may just be bored. You say he plays in the poop and makes a big mess of everything when this happens. We had an entire litter of puppies here last summer, and there were a couple who played in their poop, and it was just out of boredom. (My house and I have still not recovered from the onslaught of the puppies)! Try giving him a really cool toy that he only gets when he is at the vet's office and only when he has done his business outside.
