Beef Dog

In the phrase "That's a beef hot dog." What type of word is "beef?"?
Is "beef" a noun? Verb? Adjective? I realize that "beefy" would be an adjective that describes hot dog.
Or "I want a Philly cheesesteak." What's "Philly?"
Beef in the sentence is an adjective (modifies the noun hot-dog which is really one word not two).
Philly is also an adjective, modifies the noun cheesesteak.
The trick here is to locate the noun. When it's compound nouns like these it gets interesting.
The proof that it's an adjective comes from the idea that hot dog and cheese steak are really compound nouns, because the sentence wouldn't make sense if you took out the word 'hot'.
